Artificial Intelligence
There are all kinds of discussions regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in the arts today, and since everyone else is weighing in, why shouldn't I? My conclusion- it's a mixed bag.
Pros- AI has some amazing abilities to summarize data. When I'm looking for a quick, concise bit of research I'll admit it's hard to beat. One quick summary vs. slogging through 15 articles and all of their ads? Heck yeah! And as a tool to find grammar & spelling errors, it's a cheap and easy alternative. I get it.
Cons- It takes the human factor out of anything it touches. That may be great for sorting recycled materials, but in the arts it could be a death knell for many.
.
AI gets a lot of attention for writing papers/doing homework for students. I can't say strongly enough how morally opposed I am to this. We're creating a generation of kids and adults who simply don't know how to write the most basic sentences, much less real work.
Mostly how I know AI will never replace true artists is that it doesn't have a soul. I've experienced my share of AI art and songs and stories, and none of them had the slightest emotional impact on me.
I present some examples of what AI can't do.
================================
Exhibit A- John Keats letter to Fanny Brawne, 1 July, 1819.
"I almost wish
we were butterflies
and liv'd but three summer days-
three such days with you
I could fill with more delight
than fifty common years
could ever contain."
Tell me someone you love them without saying the words "I love you." This is how it's done.
Exhibit B- Flag Raising at Iwo Jima (Joe Rosenthal)
Arguably the most famous photograph ever taken, it had/has the ability to evoke a crazy range of emotions. Triumph, sacrifice, brotherhood... All of that and more in one real-life moment.
Exhibit C- Bonnie Raitt- Nick of Time
"When did the choices get so hard
With so much more at stake?
Life gets mighty precious
When there's less of it to waste"
As I've gotten older, it's allowed me to see her words in a whole new light. I suspect most humans have thoughts like this, she managed to capture them brilliantly.
=====================================
When AI can make me cry, we'll talk. Until then...
Bonus thought- "Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley is among the best books I've ever read. To learn more about the picture and the men behind the picture, I can't suggest it strongly enough.
